Disability access and inclusion

Accessible Outdoors Program – recognising the value of inclusive outdoor spaces

ForestrySA has joined forces with the National Parks and Wildlife Service and SA Water to make the great outdoors more accessible to everyone.

Through a partnership with community organisation Bedford Group, the Accessible Outdoors Program has been launched with a program of outdoor activities in parks, reservoirs and forests to assist people living with a disability to spend time outdoors. This innovative program is dedicated to breaking down barriers and helping to foster a deeper connection to nature.

A range of facilitated activities for people living with a disability or mobility issues have been made available through this program, including kayaking, guided walks, fossicking, learning camping skills, forest bathing and guided snorkelling.

One of the core elements of the program is to raise awareness about the barriers faced by some visitors to public open spaces, and we want to provide an opportunity for people to share their experiences and offer insights on the challenges and obstacles they face. This valuable feedback will inform how we can improve approaches to accessibility within outdoor areas, to ensure as many people as possible can enjoy these amazing natural spaces.

ForestrySA Disability Access and Inclusion Plan 2020 – 2023

South Australia’s first State Disability Inclusion Plan – Inclusive SA, established as part of the Disability Inclusion Act 2018, was launched on 1 November 2019 by the Premier and Minister for Human Services.

In accordance with this, ForestrySA has developed a Disability Access and Inclusion Plan 2020-23 to document its commitment to including and providing access to those in the community living with a disability.
